bug juice

chloe crosby

Gnats float a lazy backstroke
on the broken surface of my mug
A pool of water left stagnant on the windowsill

Ceramic isn’t typical, but metal tastes like pennies

Kamikaze fruit flies dive, unseen, into water I’ll later chug
How many flies have I sipped because I forgot to
Look

I am a vegetarian.

Pider

Little spider made of lint,
perched upon my bookshelf, dusty.
To see him you must surely squint-
or miss him lying, reposed, musty.

Where he’s from, he will not share,
But it’s not imperative I know.
He is perhaps made up of hair,
or yarn or string cast by fan-winds blown.

My little spider may not stay long,
as dust bunnies too rarely do,
But lint spiders go and come along-
The next one will be here all too soon.

Chloe Crosby is an 18-year-old lesbian from Southern Maine, spending a lot of her time exploring its rocky coast and mysterious forests, always looking for her next poetic muse. Her voice is inspired by the likes of Edgar Allen Poe, Shel Silverstein, and Robert Frost, whose poems her dad used to read her every night before bed. Before she decided to become a vet tech, she wanted to be an entomologist! It’s her passion for animals, insects, and nature in general that inspires her to write.
