Submissions

guidelines and minor details

If it’s weird, if it’s nostalgic, if it’s urgent, we desire a glance.

fiction
  • We are always in search of literary fiction and its sub-genres.
  • Prose up to 4,500 words or 3 pieces of flash fiction (up to 1,500 words per piece) in a single submission.
poetry
  • We are interested in publishing folios, not individual poems. Send up to 5 pieces in a single submission. We do our best to honor the integrity of a poem and any experimental formatting.
creative nonfiction
  • We prefer essays (4,500 words max.) that expand beyond a personal scope. Criticism, narratives, and reviews are encouraged to tether to a broader context and prioritize accessibility to a larger readership.
  • We will not consider academic work.
  • Queries or pitches are not required, but they are welcomed.

when to submit

  • Effy publishes on a rolling basis, typically publishing one piece of each genre weekly.
  • Our open calls are during the first 7 days of each month. (We are currently OPEN! 2.1.26 — 2.7.26)
    • Work submitted to us outside of this window will not be reviewed by our team.
  • For the latest updates on our publishing calendar and exclusive submission calls, we recommend subscribing to our newsletter.
